Assists the frontal belly in drawing the epicranial aponeurosis towards the front of the cranium.
The upper, often faintly marked, is named the highest nuchal line, and to it the epicranial aponeurosis is attached.
Above these lines the bone is covered by the galea aponeurotica ( epicranial aponeurosis ); below them it forms part of the temporal fossa, and affords attachment to the temporalis muscle.
The surgeon forms a pocket beneath the epicranial aponeurosis ( the subgaleal space ) and allows CSF to drain from the ventricles, creating a fluid-filled swelling on the baby's scalp.
